Guide to Main Street, U.S.A. at Disney World’s Magic Kingdom

As you pass underneath the Walt Disney World Railroad Station and enter the Magic Kingdom, you are funneled through Main Street U.S.A.  Meant to bring back a sense of early 1900s Americana, you’ll stroll through a town square setting, complete with a flag pole, train station, and ice cream parlor, among other things.  Now, sitting behind all of the turn-of-the-century facades are shops…lots of them.  The visual assault of spending starts immediately.  But more on that in a bit.  For now, this is our guide to Main Street, U.S.A at Disney World’s Magic Kingdom!

Main Street also contains most of the park services for guests.  You can pick up rentals, lockers, maps, etc. here.  You’ll be able to find the baby center and first aid centers at the end of Main Street too.

Looking down Main Street, U.S.A towards Cinderella Castle.

As you enter the park, you start in Town Square, which houses City Hall, a Fire Station and the Theater.  Each has their own interactive experience or purposes.  The Theater houses character meet and greets, while City Hall is a guest relations location.  The Theater is also the PhotoPass headquarters for Magic Kingdom.  You can also pick up any needed photo related items here if you forgot things for your camera.  If you are into pin trading, you can pick up some pins here.  Don’t forget we recommend buying a pack of pins on Amazon before you come so you can save big.

As you move down Main Street, you’ll pass numerous shops, dining options, and more.  Main Street ultimately ends at the Plaza.  This is the hub of all the Magic Kingdom, which houses the iconic Cinderella’s Castle.

Attractions

Walt Disney World Railroad

Hop aboard one of four 1920s era steam engine locomotives.  Okay, technically not all the engines were built in the 20s, but 1916 is close enough.  Take a 1.5-mile journey around the outer edges of Magic Kingdom.  There are two additional train stations, one in Frontierland (near Splash Mountain) and one in Fantasyland (near the Barnstormer).  Trains should get to the station every 5-10 minutes.  The four engines are named:

  • Walter E. Disney, named after Walt Disney
  • Lilly Belle, named after Walt’s wife, Lillian
  • Roy O. Disney, named after Walt’s brother
  • Roger E. Broggie, named after an original Imagineer who led the railroad project at Walt Disney World Resort

Entertainment

In addition to the actual attractions you can ride, Main Street, U.S.A. has several entertainment options you can take in.  Below we’ll cover what else you can do.  Note that showtimes are continually changing, so you should check the showtimes for the specific days you will be in the park.

The Dapper Dans

The Dapper Dans is a barbershop quartet that sings a soulful a cappella Americana and Disney tunes.  I wouldn’t expect to hear your latest Disney songs, however, as this is supposed to be more of a turn of the century group, although they do sing mid-1900s songs.  They also do some tap dancing and throw in some bad jokes (they call it vaudeville humor) along the way.  Shows happen every hour or so, starting around 9:00 AM going until about 3:00 PM. Shows last about 20 minutes.  Get a schedule for the day you plan on being at the park for exact times.

Main Street Trolley Show

Dressed in costumes from the turn of the century 1900s, 12 performers ride a trolley occasionally stopping for a song and a dance.  The show happens every hour to an hour and a half throughout the morning.  The last show of the day is usually around noon.

Casey’s Corner Pianist

About the time the Trolley Show stops of the day, Casey’s Corner Pianist fires up the piano.  The pianist will plan for about 20 minutes each hour from around noon until 6:00 PM.  Much like the Dapper Dans, you’ll have some cheesy humor mixed in with the songs.  You can find this show at Casey’s Corner.  If you want to hear something specific, feel free to make a request.  This isn’t a dueling piano bar though, so don’t expect him to belt out Rocket Man or your favorite Bon Jovi song.

Main Street Philharmonic

This marching band plays classic tunes from Disney films mixed with ragtime and swing.  Songs are usually the older Disney movies.  Shows are only Sunday through Thursday, usually one around 1:30 PM and another around 3:45 PM.  It lasts about 20 minutes.  Note that you can also catch the band around noon time back in Fantasyland at Storybook Circus.

Sorcerers of the Magic Kingdom

In the Fire Station, you can pick up cards for a magical scavenger hunt called Sorcerers of the Magic Kingdom.  The scavenger hunt usually lasts a while, depending on how fast you move.  We’d say you should allot an hour to be safe.  If you’re moving fast, you might only need 30 minutes.

The Crystal Palace

This buffet-style dining experience also serves as a character meal where you can meet Winnie the Pooh and a few of his friends.  Usually, that involves Tigger, Eeyore, and Piglet.  If you enter the restaurant and feel like you are in a greenhouse, you’d actually be right!  The architecture is inspired by Victorian greenhouses of the late 1800s.  The Crystal Palace is bursting with light, topiaries, and tropical palms.

The name kind of says it all.  It’s an ice cream parlor straight out of the early 1900s.  Come in for a scoop or two of your favorite cold treat.  Edy’s Ice Cream sponsors the ice cream parlor, so that’s the brand of ice cream they serve.

Shops

As we said, when we began this section, there is a ton of shopping along Main Street.  We won’t list every single shop here, but below are the ones we think are worth your time if you are looking to pick up a few things.

Emporium

The Emporium is the largest gift shop in Magic Kingdom.

The Chapeau

Stop here for a large selection of hats and Mickey ears.  You can get your name put on your Mickey ears here too.

Main Street Confectionary

Stop in here for a fun selection of sweet treats, many of which are made in house.  Watch your dessert come to life before your very eyes.

Uptown Jewelers

They carry a broad selection of upscale Disney jewelry, handbags, and art.

Harmony Barber Shop

The barber shop offers children’s and adult haircuts from licensed cosmetologists.  A signature treat for young kids is the “My First Haircut” package, which is a basic haircut that also gets you little one commemorative Mickey Ears and a certificate.  The package runs $25.

Main Street Chamber of Commerce (aka Package Pickup)

This one isn’t an actual shop, but it is a potential lifesaver for you.  If you buy items in the park, you can have them sent to the Chamber of Commerce, where they will hold your package(s) until you collect them at the end of the day.  This will help prevent you from carrying around the load of souvenirs you collect throughout your day.
